On Wednesday April 25th students at the Bucksport Early Care and Education Center got a chance to learn about boat and water safety with crew members from the U.S. Coast Guard’s Southwest Harbor station.
In an event organized by Adele Berzinis, a Bucksport ECEC parent, preschool and elementary aged children at the Jewett School got to explore a 26-foot U.S. Coast guard boat, try on life jackets, and read stories about water safety. Each child also received books to keep.
The Coast Guard members were: Chief Timothy Chase; Cameron Morgan, Joe Tkaczuk, Anna Layman, Kevin Grant, Matthew Santana, Joe Holt, Tara Frey, Sami Jasser, Jason Gwiazdzinski, Sean Larranaga, and Joshua Schmidt.

On March 30th 2012, Linda Shepard of the Stonington Early Care and Education Center, also known as Island Head Start, was honored at the Child and Family Opportunities, Inc. All Staff celebration for her 35 years of service. Linda, a former Head Start parent and grandparent, has helped support generations of Stonington and Deer Isle children through her dedication to early education. She has been a mentor and strong supporter of teachers, families, and community members throughout her years. Some of her former students are now teachers with her at CFO! Congratulations and Thank You to Linda for all of her wonderful years of service!

STONINGTON — For two dozen youngsters, it was nothing but fun.
Little did they know the games they played were part of valuable health, developmental and dental screenings offered at an Early Childhood Health Fair last Saturday.
Amy Vaughn, director of Healthy Peninsula, said the health fair sponsored by Ready by 21 attracted 23 children between the ages of 18 months and 5 years, their families and dozens of community members and health-care providers.
Vaughn said the enthusiastic turnout makes it certain that other health fairs will be held in the future.

CCO Resource Development Center 1987-2012

On March 30th 2012, the Child Care Opportunities Resource and Development Center ( CCO-RDC ) will officially close its operations due to loss of funding through DHHS. Child Care Opportunities is a program of Child and Family Opportunities, Inc. and has been in operation since 1987. Other services offered by CFO such as Head Start, Early Head Start and childcare are not impacted by this cut and will continue as usual.
The CCO-RDC is a child care resource and referral agency serving Hancock and Washington counties and has provided a single point of access for parents seeking child care or information related to child care, as well training, technical assistance and consultation to child care providers.
