As veteran sheriffs and jail administrators, we have a request to help prevent future crime: Do not make deep cuts to Head Start and home visiting programs.
These programs offer us an excellent opportunity to cut crime and save public money because crime itself is so expensive.

When it comes to raising and educating area children into healthy and prepared adults, “no single group or program can be solely responsible,” said Healthy Peninsula director Amy Vaughn. Parents, schools, community members and organizations all need to “work together toward a common vision,” continued Vaughn at a Ready by 21 meeting on Thursday, December 1.
Vaughn explained that Ready by 21’s aim is to develop that common vision and set of shared goals with measurable outcomes. Ready by 21 grew out of a Healthy Peninsula work group on substance abuse.

Healthy Peninsula in collaboration with The Acadia Hospital, Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, and George Stevens Academy Parent Association is hosting a community forum to investigate the issue of Bath Salts and Opiates and to ask the following questions: Are we seeing bath salts and opiate use in our area? CFO is announcing the closure of our Machias Valley Early Care and Education Center (ECEC) located in Marshfield. The center has been serving area infants and toddlers and their families since 2002. Recently our landlord gave us 60 days’ notice that he was terminating our lease for reasons allowed in our agreement. This was a business decision and we hold no ill feelings toward him for exercising this option. However, in this economic climate we cannot afford to renovate another space and remove and relocate our playground to another location.
