A Day for All CFO Staff

Trenton, April 3, 2009
CFO sets aside one day each spring for an “All Staff” Training. This is an opportunity for staff from Washington and Hancock counties to meet face-to-face, introduce new hires, and renew a commitment to the families served by all areas of the organization. Planned by Pat Pcolar, Human Resource Director, this year’s staff day centered around the theme of Health and Wellness.

To start the festivities, Megan London, Education and Disability Manager, led the group in an enthusiastic warm-up based on the national “I am Moving, I am Learning” (IMIL) fitness and healthy choices program. In addition to all staff day, Megan has presented the IMIL program to staff in all centers as well as private providers in Hancock and Washington Counties. The program is designed to develop an awareness of the importance of good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle, and making sure children are presented with healthy choices.

Jeanie Mills, Executive Director, spoke to the group about the future of CFO. In particular, the opportunity exists to offer more services to Maine’s youngest and most vulnerable population — infants and toddlers. Part of the federal government stimulus package money intended for child care will be earmarked for our youngest children. In addition, Jeanie also discussed exciting collaborations that CFO has fostered in the past year. One program, the Bucksport food program, provides healthy home-cooked meals the Kindergarten children who share a school site with Bucksport Early Care Education Center. Jeanie also presented recognition awards to employees for long standing service to Child and Family Opportunities as well as awards for education achieved.

Charlie Zeph, Child Care Opportunities Resource and Development Center Director, shared the fun and moving “FISH” video with the group. “FISH” documents the work lives of group of fish market employees at the Pike Place Market in Seattle who love their jobs and believe in getting the most out of each day. Team work and cheerful dedication to their customers are practiced on a daily basis, resulting in customers who love to visit the fish market, and staff who have a great time on the job. The four tenets of the FISH model for work are: Play, Make their Day, Be There, and Choose your Attitude. Child and Family Opportunities employees were encouraged to use these principles in their daily work and interactions with clients, children, and families.

To close, the floor was open for any staff to share their experiences in the past year, or their vision for the year to come. The day ended with the presentation of door prizes generously contributed by area businesses and a promise to meet again next year.

CFO would like to extent a big Thank You! to these local businesses who donated goods and services to support our All Staff day.
